Misogi Updates

The past few weeks for us have been great and bad all at the same time. We lost 2 runners from our group who had some pretty major personal issues arise. We feel for them, but it also didn’t damper our motivation thankfully. We know that our Airbnb’s are booked, flights are being logistically handed for the guys and things are now fully coming together. Our latest problem-solving came from ordering our taxi to drive us from Avalon to Two Harbors. After some deliberation, we decided to start in Two Harbors. This would allow us to start at around 5 am in Two Harbors and end up back at our Airbnb whenever we finish. We figured out a few things for this to be advantageous. 1) It allowed us to set our departure time to the trailhead and lock that in. 2) It gave us an unlimited window for run time in case something happens on the trail. 3) We can end at our house with all the snacks, water, and goodies our hearts desire. We also think it will make for some cool sunrise and sunset.

After scanning the trails and maps a bit more in detail now that we know our direction, we found a few places to stop and refuel along the way. There is a general store in Two Harbors to stop at after we make our first loop around the North side of the Island. There are multiple campsite locations along the way and even a ranger station right off the trail. There are reservoirs and a few water locations, as well as the airport for a possible lunch or snack before moving on. So, we feel good about how much food and water to carry between each point.

For training, it’s ramped up a bit in terms of miles and time in shoes (if you will.) Mine has been good, and have been running trails every day with some hill sprints thrown in. I’ve been in the gym about 3-4 times a week either at the CrossFit gym or my local gym doing my own program. After speaking with the guys, they also have been doing some marathons, half-marathons, climbing/hiking local peaks in their area, and getting after it in their own right. It’s truly been an awesome experience thus far to embark on this effort with a group.

Until next time!
