2024 Misogi Recap

The Trybe on an island

This past weekend 5 guys took off on the Trans-Catalina Trail at 0500 in the dark to embark on the 38.5 mile trail across the Island of Catalina off the coast of California. For every member on the team, it was the longest run they have ever set off on.

But what’s a misogi? Or what’s it mean to us? To us, it’s the modernization of the ancient Shinto tradition of a cleanse. We embark on a yearly challenge hard enough that it has a 50/50 shot of us finishing. That’s our gauge of how hard it needs to be. It can be physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, or other. There is no gauge on ‘what’ the challenge needs to be, it just needs to be a challenge!

Heres the stats from this year:

-41 miles covered, unsupported
-8500ft of elevation gain
-13 hours
-5 guys, 4 finishers
-A close buffalo encounter (with 15+ buffalos)
-Unexpected Burritos
-1 island, 1 trail
-There was 8 miles to go for about 8 miles
-Some top phrases from fellow trail goers: Peak Fitness, Wow, good luck
-An incredible experience
